Department of Respiratory Medicine – AVMCH
Respiratory health is an important part of overall well-being, and specialized care is essential for managing conditions affecting the lungs and respiratory system. Respiratory Medicine, also known as pulmonology, focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia, tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, sleep-related breathing disorders, and respiratory failure. At Aarupadai Veedu Medical College & Hospital (AVMCH), Puducherry, the Department of Respiratory Medicine combines clinical care, medical education, advanced diagnostics, and research.
Respiratory Medicine at AVMCH
The Department of Respiratory Medicine at AVMCH provides comprehensive respiratory services for patients while offering clinical exposure to medical students and postgraduate trainees. The department supports MBBS education and offers an MD in Respiratory Medicine with two permitted seats.
Students receive exposure to respiratory conditions and clinical procedures through bedside teaching, academic conferences, simulations, and specialized training in areas such as bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy.
Advanced Pulmonary Diagnostics and Treatment
Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective respiratory care. The department provides access to pulmonary function testing, spirometry, bronchoscopy, imaging support, sleep studies, and laboratory investigations. Its bronchoscopy suite supports diagnostic procedures such as biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage, as well as therapeutic interventions.
The department also operates a sleep laboratory with polysomnography facilities for evaluating sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders. Pulmonary function testing helps assess airway and restrictive lung diseases.
Specialized Respiratory Clinics
AVMCH offers focused outpatient services for several respiratory conditions. Specialty care includes bronchial asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, sleep apnea, and tuberculosis. The department also provides smoking cessation and de-addiction services.
The Tuberculosis/NTEP clinic provides daily CBNAAT testing, supporting timely evaluation and management of tuberculosis. The department also conducts community screening programs and health camps aimed at improving awareness and early detection of respiratory illnesses.
Critical Care and Interventional Respiratory Services
Patients with severe respiratory conditions may require intensive monitoring and specialized support. The department has dedicated High Dependency Unit and Respiratory Intensive Care Unit facilities for critically ill patients, including those with severe COPD, pneumonia, and respiratory failure.
Interventional services include bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, and ultrasound-guided biopsy or aspiration. These procedures can support both diagnosis and treatment while providing postgraduate trainees with valuable practical exposure.
Research in Respiratory Medicine
Research is an important component of the department's academic activities. Since 2023, departmental research has focused on areas including COPD and asthma severity markers, respiratory quality of life, pulmonary function, biomarkers, and occupational respiratory health. The department reports eight research projects since 2023 and five published articles.
These research activities provide opportunities for students and faculty to investigate respiratory diseases and contribute to evidence-based approaches in pulmonary medicine.
Career Opportunities in Respiratory Medicine
Respiratory Medicine offers diverse career opportunities in hospitals, medical colleges, intensive care units, pulmonary clinics, research institutions, and healthcare organizations. Postgraduate training can help doctors develop expertise in pulmonology, critical care, interventional bronchoscopy, sleep medicine, tuberculosis care, and respiratory research.
