Planning the outside of a house means answering two questions at once: what goes on top, and what goes on the walls. Most people start with a search. They type in sloping roof materials in India, or they jump straight to the money with asphalt shingles price India, and end up with pages that contradict each other.

This guide sorts it out. It explains what shingles are, how they compare with other sloping roof options, what the price numbers look like, and where wall cladding fits. Product details come from CertainTeed India's own pages, and price figures come from named sources, so you can check them yourself.

What are shingle roof tiles, and how do they differ from clay tiles?

Shingle roof tiles is how many buyers describe asphalt shingles, though the name is a little misleading. These aren't ceramic. A shingle is a composite: reinforced fibreglass mesh, mineral-stabilised asphalt, and a top layer of ceramic-coated granules.

Each CertainTeed shingle measures 335 mm by 1000 mm, with 145 mm exposed once it's laid. The common pattern is laminated, meaning two layers bonded together, which gives a thicker piece with shadow lines. The manufacturer describes the shingles as light and flexible, and says they come in a wide range of colours and patterns. In practice that makes them easier to carry up a ladder than a clay tile, and easier to fold over hips and ridges.

They do have one firm limit. They need a sloped roof. The maker says they suit RCC slabs, wood and fibre cement board, at slopes from 15 to 90 degrees. A flat terrace isn't a candidate.

Which sloping roof materials in India are worth comparing?

If you're building a shortlist of sloping roof materials in India, four families usually come up. Here's how they compare in broad terms.

Material Weight and handling Look Worth checking
Clay or concrete tiles Heavy, so the structure must carry it Classic, traditional Roof frame capacity, breakage in transit
Metal sheets Light, big panels go up fast Plain, industrial Noise in heavy rain, heat gain
Fibre cement sheets Moderate Utilitarian Colour and finish choices
Asphalt shingles Light and flexible, small pieces Wide colour and pattern range Needs a sloped roof and a solid deck

No material wins everywhere. If your roof is close to flat, shingles are out, and a sheet material may fit better. If your structure is light, a heavy tile could force expensive changes underneath, so ask any supplier for the weight per square before you commit. Shingles suit sloped roofs where looks, weight and easy handling all matter.

The gallery is worth a look too. Seeing finished roofs tells you more about colour and pattern than any brochure will.

What is the asphalt shingles price India buyers can expect?

Prices swing quite a bit, so honest answers come as ranges. CertainTeed India's 2026 guide to roof replacement costs puts the asphalt shingles price India at roughly ?80 to ?150 per square foot. Its separate shingle cost guide splits that by type: about ?50 to ?80 for basic three-tab shingles, ?80 to ?120 for laminated architectural shingles, and ?120 to ?200 for premium ranges.

Supplier listings on TradeIndia in 2026 land in a similar area. Asking prices for products described as asphalt shingles run from about ?85 to ?150 per square foot.

Treat all of that as a guide, not a quote. Listings rarely say what thickness, layers or warranty the rate covers, so two products at the same price can be very different. The cost guide also says its figures leave out extras such as removing the old roof, underlayment, ventilation and flashing.

Here's a quick illustration. A 1,000 sq ft sloped roof at the laminated range of ?80 to ?120 per square foot comes to ?80,000 to ?1,20,000 before extras. That's arithmetic, not an estimate for your home. Roof area is measured along the slope, so it's bigger than the floor plan beneath it. Premium ranges change the sum: the same 1,000 sq ft at ?120 to ?200 would run from ?1,20,000 to ?2,00,000.

How does shingles roofing sheet price work, and what's left out?

Plenty of buyers search for shingles roofing sheet price expecting one figure per sheet. The trade doesn't really work that way. Shingles are small pieces laid in overlapping rows, so rates are normally quoted per square foot of roof covered. Ask for the rate, then ask exactly what it includes.

A proper quote lists the shingle range and then the work around it. On a concrete roof, the maker's method calls for a cement screed at least 1 inch thick, finished smooth and bone dry, then a bituminous primer. On wood or fibre cement, the deck should be at least 16 mm thick. Add flashing membrane for junctions and valleys, a starter course, ridge pieces, fixings and labour.

If one quote skips the deck work and another includes it, they can't be compared. Line them up item by item. And if someone gives you a single shingles roofing sheet price without asking a word about your roof, treat it as a guess.

Where does vinyl wall cladding fit in?

A roof is only half of the exterior story. CertainTeed India also supplies vinyl wall cladding, sold as vinyl sidings. These are PVC panels, each 8 inches by 12 feet, fixed to a vertical wall of RCC, wood, fibre cement board or gypsum board.

The system comes with accessories, including a starter strip, corner posts, J-channels and undersill trim. The maker lists a wind load pressure of 135 mph and a Class 1 (A) fire rating, and mentions fade protection among the advantages. Patterns include Encore, Restoration Classic, Monogram and Cedar Impressions.

Installation matters as much on walls as on roofs. The maker's method calls for a wall levelled to plumb, aluminium battens fixed vertically at 16-inch centres, corrosion-resistant nails of the prescribed size, and a starter course kept 1/4 inch off the ground. Nails go in the centre of the slots so the panels can move with temperature changes. That last detail is easy to get wrong, so ask your installer about it.

When you compare quotes for vinyl wall cladding, check that the accessories are priced too. Starter strips, corner posts and trim all change the final total.

How much upkeep do shingles and vinyl walls need?

The maker lists zero maintenance for both products. That's encouraging, but no exterior deserves to be forgotten. Once a year, and again after the monsoon, walk around the house. Clear leaves from roof valleys and gutters, look for lifted or damaged shingles, and check that wall panels still sit straight.

Small problems are cheap to fix early. A lifted shingle costs almost nothing to secure. A leak that's been running for a season costs a lot more.

What should you check before you order?

  1. Slope and deck. Is the roof between 15 and 90 degrees, and is the base sound?

  2. Scope. Ask for an itemised quote covering deck preparation, flashing, starter course, ridge pieces and fixings.

  3. Standards. CertainTeed India states a Class A fire rating under ASTM E108, a wind rating of 100 km/hr under ASTM D3161, and compliance with ASTM D3462 for tear resistance. Ask any maker for the paperwork behind its claims.

  4. Warranty. The maker states 25 years, limited, so read the conditions.

  5. Installer. Ask whether they've fitted this product before, and ask to see a finished roof.

  6. Product name. Shingle roof tiles can describe different products, so confirm the exact range, pattern and construction in writing.

  7. Colour. Look at samples outdoors, next to your wall colour, in morning and afternoon light.

Quick answers before you decide

Are shingle roof tiles the same as clay tiles?

No. Shingles are a fibreglass and asphalt composite, laid in small overlapping pieces. Clay tiles are ceramic and much heavier. They suit different structures, so check what your roof frame can carry.

Can vinyl wall cladding go with a shingle roof?

Yes. They're separate products, and many exteriors use both. Choose colours together, with samples side by side, before you order either.

Is the asphalt shingles price India the same in every city?

No. The rate depends on the range, the quantity, the deck work and the installer. Get an itemised quote for your own roof.
